Years of Sally - 2018
In 2018 we have another recording that has not, yet, found it's way into the database. Sally is reported to have appeared with Amerjit Deu (who she also appeared with in another unfound recording - Happy Together from 2002), playing "Sarah" alongside Deu's "Hassan" in the 15 minute short movie "Hassan's Tower". The story is annotated as exploring "themes of grief, isolation and human connection through Hassan, an elderly man struggling to cope with loneliness after losing his wife". I understand that awards were won at small film festivals in Leeds (2018) and Bristol (2019).
On a number of occasions, in the Group, I have commended the recording of one of Sally's theatre appearances in particular. Not least because it is the only theatre performance for which I have managed to source a recording!
In 2018 Oscar Wilde's play, performed at the Vaudeville Theatre in London, "An Ideal Husband" was broadcast to cinema's across the UK and recorded for Amazon Prime's Marquee TV. The play is very funny and Sally's performance is exceptional alongside Edward Fox, Freddie Fox, Frances Barber and Susan Hampshire. Sally played Lady Chiltern and Nathaniel Parker, Lord Chiltern (appeared alongside Sally in My Family). Lord Chiltern is climbing the political ladder but he has skeleton's in his closet! At the risk of sounding even more repetitive, I cannot commend this performance highly enough. A near must for any Sally fan.
2018 was a good year for the author of these notes!
It is, also, no secret that my favourite Sally character outside of Lucy and Martha (although I absolutely love Donna, Kim Alabaster and Cat Durnford) is Sarah from "Thanks for the Memories". Sally gets a "best supporting actress", for me, alongside the lead characters Tamzin Merchant (Joyce) and Tom Wlaschiha (Justin). Sarah plays the hilarious, "almost" love interest, for Justin who eventually becomes his best friend as he seeks the affections of Joyce. Sarah's attempts at wooing Justin are very funny. As are her attempts at finding love supported by her new best friend.
Recordings of "Thanks for the Memories" are difficult to track down. Although recorded in English it was a show intended for the German market (Wlaschiha) and I struggled to source it myself. There are some German DVD's on eBay which, I assume, will have the English Soundtrack as does the copy in the database.
Not Going Out moved on to Series 9 in 2018. Sally sported the shortest haircut that we have seen for her!
The series continued to be exceptional and Sally outstanding. This time Lucy gets embroiled in a comedy of disasters as she and Lee attempt to clear up a builders mess at her parents house, she sets up an Escape Room as a birthday present for Lee, she and Lee go hunting for a missing toy ring suspecting neighbours Toby and Anna as having stolen it, a family pet, a last minute dinner cancellation with Toby and Anna, controversial intervention around the school lollipop man handing out lollipops, considering breast augmentation and the excellent Christmas special performed entirely live.
