Years of Sally - 2008

2008 was a lean year for Sally and acting credits. Not Going Out was not to return until 2009. However she was to appear at Shakespeare's Globe for Dominic Dromgoole's production of "King Lear" which ran from April through to August. There is sure to have been a significant period of casting and rehearsals prior to that which could well account for a large part of the early year. 

Cast members included David Calder as King Lear. His daughters were played by Sally (Goneril), Jodie McNee (Cordelia) and Kellie Bright of Eastenders fame (Regan).

How an enjoyment of the work of Sally Bretton developed into an obsession and, ultimately, a desire to share. (Picture - Daily Telegraph, 28th March 2025 - Interview for Beyond Paradise Series 3)  My first encounter with the work of Sally goes back to her appearances with Harry Enfield in the early 2000's. After her childhood career and just as her adult career was getting underway. I was captivated, of course, by her looks. But, more significantly to me, by the comic performances. So often, in the early days, as a foil for a comedy "genius" of the time. (Picture - Harry Enfield's Brand Spanking New Show, 2000 - "People Think We're Sisters" ) It took me twenty years for that enjoyment to evolve into an "obsession" and by the 2020's I had started to hunt down everything that I could find involving Sally's work. Over time I grew a haphazard collection of DVD's and downloads where it was nigh on impossible to find anything....

To my knowledge Sally has only once appeared with Catherine Tate on TV. The significance being that, under different circumstances regarding Tate, Sally might never have appeared on Not Going Out. It is common knowledge that Sally replaced Megan Dodds in Series 2 of NGO. But the knowledge is possibly reserved for the aficianado's that Megan Dodds was not the original Kate. In the, not televised, pilot Kate was played by Catherine Tate. Success in her other endeavours meant that Tate did not move forwards with NGO. Wild West was created by Simon Nye, of Men Behaving Badly fame. It starred Catherine Tate and Dawn French. In the penultimate episode of the second and final series, aired in April 2004, Sally played Victoria the daughter that main character Old Jake (David Bradley) never knew he had.
