Years of Sally - 2010

On Radio, Sally appeared in a dramatisation of Sarah Hall's Carhullan Army. The BBC description is as follows :-

"In an unspecified near-future, life in Britain has become unrecognisable: the floodwaters have risen, food and fuel are scarce, and the country is run by the sinister Authority. All women are forced to wear contraceptive devices. Sister, as the book's narrator calls herself, escapes this repressive world and heads for a mysterious, quasi-mythical commune of women high in the Cumbrian fells, led by the legendary Jackie Nixon. The journey is a challenge but arrival is only the beginning of Sister's struggle.".

Sally plays a character "Corky" in this recording yet to be sourced for the database.

In Sally's second, reported, appearance of 2010 she plays the murder victim "Eve Rigby" in the ITV drama "Lewis" episode "Your Sudden Death Question". Others to appear in the episode, apart from the regular cast, included Ruth Gemmell and Alan Davies. Of particular note was her appearance with her future "Not Going Out" original father Timothy West.

How an enjoyment of the work of Sally Bretton developed into an obsession and, ultimately, a desire to share. (Picture - Daily Telegraph, 28th March 2025 - Interview for Beyond Paradise Series 3)  My first encounter with the work of Sally goes back to her appearances with Harry Enfield in the early 2000's. After her childhood career and just as her adult career was getting underway. I was captivated, of course, by her looks. But, more significantly to me, by the comic performances. So often, in the early days, as a foil for a comedy "genius" of the time. (Picture - Harry Enfield's Brand Spanking New Show, 2000 - "People Think We're Sisters" ) It took me twenty years for that enjoyment to evolve into an "obsession" and by the 2020's I had started to hunt down everything that I could find involving Sally's work. Over time I grew a haphazard collection of DVD's and downloads where it was nigh on impossible to find anything....

To my knowledge Sally has only once appeared with Catherine Tate on TV. The significance being that, under different circumstances regarding Tate, Sally might never have appeared on Not Going Out. It is common knowledge that Sally replaced Megan Dodds in Series 2 of NGO. But the knowledge is possibly reserved for the aficianado's that Megan Dodds was not the original Kate. In the, not televised, pilot Kate was played by Catherine Tate. Success in her other endeavours meant that Tate did not move forwards with NGO. Wild West was created by Simon Nye, of Men Behaving Badly fame. It starred Catherine Tate and Dawn French. In the penultimate episode of the second and final series, aired in April 2004, Sally played Victoria the daughter that main character Old Jake (David Bradley) never knew he had.
